What makes a company to have both great people and people that are great? Some people say that it is about management. Other people claim that it is a HR department problem. But actually it is everyone’s job…
Someone from the top management of my company said once that talent is a combination between great people and people that are great. I´m not sure if this is true for the whole company, but at least since I started working there, I have always been surrounded by great people.
What makes a company to have both great people and people that are great? Some people say that it is about management. Leaders need to be responsible for growing that environment. The culture of any organization is shaped by the worst behavior the leader is willing to tolerate.
Other people claim that it is a HR department problem. Or they think that it is a no-management-layer matter. In all cases, that is an idealist’s way to think. Never let an idealism frame your problem in black and white.
I believe that it is everyone’s job.
What has caused millions of people to start running, exercising, and monitoring their calorie intakes? Was there a government campaign promoting healthier lifestyles? Were there thousands of medical teams selling benefits for doing that? Perhaps. But definitely, it was because people wanted to be fit too. It is a matter of general concern.
Here, it is the same case.
Let me explain with something that had happened to me. It was one year ago, when my partner Ramon and I had to travel to Rome to help our colleagues there, in an amazing agile business opportunity. We met great people there, specially Vicenso and Simone. We made a team from the beginning, and just one day after we met, we fought together for that opportunity like a team that had been working for years. With passion. They took care of us since the first time we met. They helped us to visit the impressive city of Rome and, the last day, they took us to a beautiful ancient trattoria. Also, they took us to the Vaticano in order to visit that important place. That was because they wanted to do it.
One year later, we still get in contact to share both personal and professional matters. We made an impressive collaborative team that still works nowadays. That is an amazing return of investment for the company, don´t you think? And it was not as a result of management directive or an enterprise policy. It was just great people working together. And, of course, an environment allowed by the enterprise strategy.
Therefore, it is not just about having great people in your company. It is also about making sure that you are growing an environment that allows them to become people that are great too. And it is responsibility both of managers and workforce. It is everyone’s job.
After all, as a management 3.0 claim, management is too important to leave it to the managers.
